The music industry is constantly evolving, not always for the better, but mostly (we hope) it is heading in a direction of positive change and adapting accordingly to whatever challenges are encountered.

In the midst of this change and all the technological developments, all the contentious debates about streaming, royalties, diversity and fairness, are people, people are the constant, not the variable.
Some of these people are direct employees, others are suppliers or business partners, including artists on your roster and smaller labels you provide services for such as distribution.
In order to get the best out of all parties, here are 5 actionable ways you can create a positive work environment in the music industry – no matter which sector you work in:
#1: An Encouraging Atmosphere
Everyone wants that feeling of inspiration to help them feel motivated to come to work, let alone encouraged whilst there. Don’t get so caught up in the day-to-day drudgery of monotonous tasks that you fail to look up every now and again and ‘check-in’ on your people.
#2: Strong Leadership
Leadership can come in many forms and guises, and whilst the traditional form of leadership is top-down, sometimes the reverse can be true, so-called ‘upside down leadership’. As a leader, you should occasionally be open to taking the lead from those outside of the senior leadership team who are ‘on the ground’ day-to-day.
#3: Somewhere That Values People As Much As Profit
Revenue and profit is important in business, however, it is not always the sole reason for a business existing and without people there would be no business, let’s ensure we are placing value where it matters most.
#4: Empowering All People To Make A Difference, No Matter What Their Role Is
Connected to point #2, when people feel invested and valued where they work, they feel empowered to do and be their best – whether that is someone cleaning or someone taking calls at reception, give responsibility, give praise and give credit where and when it is due.
#5: Hard-Working Colleagues
The phrase, ‘we’re in this together’, should be an unspoken motto wherever you are, teams are only as strong as their weakest link, but let’s not dismiss colleagues who don’t ‘appear’ to be working as hard or as ‘loud’ as others, instead, try to do some fact finding, perhaps they need training in specific areas or maybe they just need a new challenge?
Summary
I always say it, people are at the heart of everything that happens in business, no matter their job title, age, gender or career experience, businesses do not exist in a vacuum without the human beings that start them, work in them and build them.
If you are a business leader, people manager or in another senior role within an organisation, have a think about your own company or team environment, how many of these 5 methods do you have in place to create a positive work environment for your team?
Remember, the best time to start was yesterday, the next best time is today, take action now!
