Music companies can play a crucial role in society. Whether that is by providing goods and services, creating jobs, or by contributing towards economic growth and development.

However, the most important asset of any business, is also the one that is often taken for granted – that is: people; the people that are employed by the business and the people the business serves.

Whether you’re a business owner, business leader or an employee, here are 5 simple steps you can take to improve your business and transform your music company culture:

Step 1: Be Open

Give people in your organisation a voice, establish a culture that encourages creative thinking and calculated risk taking, create an environment that encourages people to share thoughts and ideas.

Step 2: Build Trust

Avoid the restrictive mindset of ‘presenteeism’, that is, the idea of needing to see your people, in order to believe that they are working and being productive.

Be flexible, trust the people you hire and work with, believe they are going to do what they are there to do and in most cases, you will indeed see exactly that.

Step 3: Be People-Centric

Get your priorities in order and put people at the top of the agenda, there is no industry without business, there is no business without people – employees, clients and customers, they all matter.

Step 4: Standardise Processes and Operations

Essentially, things just need to make sense, simplify to optimise. If it can’t be explained simply enough, it is probably not understood well enough, don’t unduly complicate things.

Step 5: Give Back

Be mindful of the future, makes plan for it and then work towards it, but not at the expense of the moment.

Whilst it is important to be focused on the here and now, be considerate and aware of the environments and eco-systems you currently exist in, give back to communities and the places people are from.

If you have (time, money, expertise etc), give; and if you can (help, advise, share knowledge etc), do.

Summary

Businesses and companies offer numerous benefits to people, society and the world in general.

Many of your favourite companies, some of the largest businesses in the world, were started by a person; people, someone just like you, someone who wanted to make their community better, someone who wanted to help society in some way, someone who wanted to help others access opportunities, let’s not forget that.

The next time you turn up for work, or purchase a product or service (including streamed audio and visual content), please remember the people, the person behind it all and treat them as you would yourself.

Dream. Believe. Achieve.
